Ventilation - One Way To Stop Premature Aging Of Your Roof!

Updated: Mar 22, 2022

Outside Temperature vs. Your Attic Temperature

Proper attic ventilation is a balancing act and must have all of the components working together for it to work effectively. It needs the combined effort of attic intake vents working in unison with exhaust vents in the roof, or at the peak.

Did you know that if the outside temperature is currently 60 degrees that your attic temperature should also be 60 degrees (plus or minus no more than 10 degrees)? More than a few degrees difference can cause structural damage, premature aging of shingles, may overwork your HVAC system and can cause higher energy bills.

What is NFA and how can it affect my home?

Ventilation products are normally rated with NFA, which stands for Net Free Airspace. The NFA is the open area that exists for air to pass through the products venting your roof. Ask your roof inspector to let you know if you have enough ventilation on your home. As a general rule, for every 150 square feet of attic floor space you would need 1 square foot or NFA to keep your system in balance. There are some variables to this, and your roofing inspection will be able to identify whether modifications in your ventilation system need to be addressed.

Intake vs. Outtake…How do I know if my home has the correct ratio?

The correct ratio is 1 unit in and 1 unit out. This balance is imperative to make the homes air flow effectively and without prematurely aging your roof.

Most homes built before 1990 were not built with the proper ventilation. Not because they were built incorrectly, but more likely because building codes before that time just were not what they are today. As with most industries we have learned a lot about what is best for your home over the past 20 plus years. Building code standards for each locality have been updated and finding a home improvement professional that knows just how much ventilation your home needs, could lengthen the life of your new roof and increase the value of your investment.
